ASA Championship (Divisionals) & Forsyth Tide State Team - Deadlines this week

Hello Marlins,

This is an exciting time in the Marlins Summer Swim Season. We have 2 meets left then we have ASA League Championship - one of the largest swim meets in the world held at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. This is an experience our swimmers enjoy every year and will likely remember the rest of their lives. Although this event is not considered mandatory, I wouldn't go as far as to say it's optional. We strongly encourage your participation in the event. We are going as a team and score points as a team and our final place is determined by team points so every individual plays an important role and your teammates would appreciate your participation so we can compete in as many events including relays as possible and represent well as the Longlake Marlins.

STATE QUALIFYING – Several municipalities use the ASA Championship as a state qualifying meet including our Forsyth County.

Information on the Forsyth Tide:

Forsyth County Tide Swimming would love for your swimmers to represent our county competing against some of the fastest swimmers from other counties around the state at the annual Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Swim Meet. If you have never been before, this meet is designed to celebrate the fastest summer swim league swimmers in each age group by county. Below are some additional details on this exciting event to help you and your family decide if you can commit to attend, should your swimmer’s time make the cut to advance.

  • The GRPA meet is Friday, July 22 (10 and unders), and Saturday, July 23 (11 and overs), at the Cherokee Aquatic Center.
  • Prelims are in the morning; finals are in the afternoon. You're required to remain present for the afternoon finals session if your child makes the cut as either a confirmed or alternate finalist. Yes, there is a brief break for lunch.
  • Swimmers may qualify/swim up to 3 individual events and 2 relays.
  • FoCo Tide uses the results at the ASA League Championship Meet (July 1st) as its qualifying meet.
  • Costs per swimmer to participate in the TIDE are estimated between $50-$75/per swimmer. Monies collected cover GRPA swimming fees, coaches’ costs, Tide cap and shirt, and admin fees. The only compensated individuals are the coaches.
  • Swimmers compete in their age group determined by swimmer’s age as of June 1, 2021
  • 6 and unders do NOT swim at state and are not allowed to qualify.
  • Practices will be weekday mornings, July 11th - July 21st, at a neighborhood pool in the south end of the county (TBD),7:30 - 9:00 a.m. (11-overs), and 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. (10-unders).*(*Times subject to change although they will remain in the morning.) Practices for GRPA state are strongly suggested but not required (either vacation or your year-round team practices may conflict). You must make every effort to attend relay practices, so your teammates get to know who you are.
  • Commitment- Committing to be “GRPA state eligible” is a serious commitment; swimmers who declare for GRPA and later inform the FoCo Tide Board that they cannot attend, cause the members of the Board to extend countless hours rearranging events/relays and trying to substitute swimmers. If your swimmer declares for GRPA and later informs us that they cannot attend, the swimmer will be assessed a fine and prohibited from swimming at the GRPA meet next year. **Once you make the declaration that your swimmer is state eligible for GRPA, he or she is committed to attending the meet if selected for the team.
  • Selection Process- After the conclusion of the ASA Forsyth County championship meet, the FoCo Tide board meets to select the FoCo Tide state swim team members. We’ll be using the ASA FINAL results and the list of declared “subgroup 7” state eligible swimmers. The top 3finishers (who declare for state eligibility) in each individual event are selected for the team. Relay teams are then selected based on times. The process is tedious and time consuming. Swimmers that make the FoCo Tide team and have committed to participating will be emailed as soon as possible following the selection process.

The following note applies only to those swimmers who are also year-round swimmers:

  • Please note the GRPA State Meet (the state swim meet for summer league swimmers) is the same weekend as the long course Senior State Championship Meet (state meet for year-round swimmers).
  • For practical purposes, your swimmers will be hard pressed to swim at both meets. If a year-round swimmer has qualified or thinks s/he will qualify for long course state, you will need to ensure there is no overlapping of events that prevents you from making it to GRPA events once committed.Swimmers who declare for GRPA and later inform the FoCo Tide Board that they cannot attend will be assessed a fine and prohibited from swimming at the GRPA meet next year.If your swimmer would prefer to go to the Senior State Championship Meet but is not sure he or she will make a state cut but might make a state cut, please consider carefully when declaring them eligible for GRPA.Once you make the declaration that your swimmer will attend GRPA, he or she is committed to attending if they qualify.
